How to calculate the index of hydrogen deficiency

In the analysis of the molecular formula of organic molecules, the degree of unsaturation (also known as the index of hydrogen deficiency (IHD), double bond equivalents, or unsaturation index) is a calculation that determines the total number of rings and π bonds. A formula is used in organic chemistry to help draw chemical structures. Every ring and multiple bond in a compound is a 'degree of unsaturation'. Each ring and double bond counts as one degree of unsaturation. Triple bonds count as two degrees of unsaturation. If the total degree of unsaturation is calculated from the molecular formula, it can greatly help establish possible structures. Index of Hydrogen Deficiency (IHD) (Excerpt from Chem 201 Lab Manual Aug 2005) There is no simple way of predicting how many isomers a given molecular formula will yield, (it can range from one to many). Structures are different if they cannot be superimposed upon one another.

A bunch of letters and numbers to calculate that appear to make little sense overall. This video will show you how to break up the complex ‘Degree of Unsaturation’ formula into very simple and easy to understand components. You will hear this referred to as: DOU = Degrees of Unsaturation; IHD = Index of Hydrogen Deficiency To calculate the index of hydrogen deficiency of a compound, subtract the number of hydrogens in its empirical formula from the number of hydrogen atoms in a saturated acyclic hydrocarbon containing the same number of carbon atoms, i.e. C n H (2n+2). Divide the difference by 2. Here's a second method for determining the Index of hydrogen deficiency (IHD). The method compares the number of hydrogen atoms in an alkane with those in an equivalent formula for the compound. A. Hydrocarbons. The general formula for an alkane is #"C"_text(n)"H"_text(2n+2)#. Each Double Bond or Ring Reduces The Hydrogen Count By 2. You should be able to see that each multiple bond (π bond ) the number of hydrogens in the formula decreases by two. Ethyne (2 π bonds) has two fewer hydrogens than ethene (1 π bond), which has two fewer hydrogens than ethane (zero π bonds). Compounds Containing Elements Other than C and H. Halogens (F, Cl, Br, I) are treated like H atoms (CH 2 Cl 2 has the same IHD as CH4). For each N, add one to the number of C and one to the number H (CH 5 N is treated as C 2 H 6 .
